Saginaw Valley Tames Panthers, 4-3 in Overtime

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Ohio Dominican, 4-3 today (Oct. 4) in overtime.  This contest was originally scheduled  for Sept. 11, but was postponed after inclement weather forced the game to end with a 0-0 tie just three minutes short of being considered an official contest.

Sophomore Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem HS) scored the first goal of the contest off a pass from Robert Short (Goodrich, Mich.) giving Saginaw Valley an early 1-0 advantage over the Panthers. Ohio Dominican would respond to the first goal just two minutes later knotting the score at 1-1. The Panthers scored one more goal in the first half taking a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Ohio Dominican extended their lead to two on a corner shot at the 56:07 mark of the contest. The Cardinals would start their comeback late in the second half scoring two goals in four minutes time. The first goal came when freshman Craig Neal (Bay City, Mich.) scored off a long pass from freshman Tyler Channell (Troy, Mich.) Savage scored his second goal of the contest off a pass from Neal tieing the score at 3-3 sending the game into overtime.

Saginaw Valley ended the game just 1:56  into overtime when junior defender Zach Myers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Eastern HS) split a pair of defenders and scored unassisted. Junior Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.) picked up his fifth win of the season saving five shots on goal.

Head coach Cale Wassermann said, "Today we struggled individually and as a unit to execute our game plan but we never quit, we need to improve on a lot of things but the boys showed great heart today and kept pushing forward, it shows a lot to not give up like that."

With the win the Cardinals improve to 7-1-2 overall on the season, and 4-1-1 in the GLIAC, while Ohio Dominican falls to 4-4-1 overall on the season, and 3-2-1 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 7) when they return home to take on Rochester College. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
