Cardinals Victorious Over Oilers, 2-1

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team extended its win streak to five today (Sept. 18) defeating the University of Findlay, 2-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.

The Cardinals were able to get on top of the Oilers early scoring just 6:04 into the game when freshman Craig Neal (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) capitilized on a shot off a pass from sophomore Morley Burns (Rochester, Mich. / Adams HS). Findlay answered right back scoring just 39 seconds later knotting the score at 1-1. Sophomore Zach Walega (Saline, Mich.) scored on a shot into the top left corner of the net allowing the Cardinals to go onto a 2-1 victory over the Oilers late in the first half of play.

Saginaw Valley outshot Findlay 20 to 10 and allowed only four shots on goal. Junior goaltender Jason Wise (Toy, Mich.) picked up his fifth win of the season making him 5-0 overall, and 2-0 in the GLIAC. Head coach Cale Wassermann stated, "This will be a big week for us as we get ready in preparations for our first home game against local rival, Northwood University. We hope to have a big turnout of fan support out at the game on Friday."

With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 5-0 overall on the season, and 2-0 in the GLIAC, while Findlay falls to 0-6 overall on the season, and 0-4 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 23) when they play Northwood for their season home opener. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
