Saginaw Valley Defeats Flyers in Overtime, 1-0

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated Lewis University 1-0 in overtime today (Sept. 1) in their 2011 season opener.

The Cardinals were unable to capitalize on any of their eight shots in the first two halves of play sending the game into overtime. Saginaw Valley scored the only goal of the contest 1:52 into overtime when sophomore Zach Walega (Saline, Mich.) had a breakaway goal allowing the Cardinals to go on to a 1-0 victory over the Flyers.

Jason Wise (Troy, Mich.) and the rest of the Saginaw Valley defense were able to keep the Lewis offense from scoring on any of their 13 shots throughout the contest. Wise is now 1-0 overall on the season season and has recorded his first shutout.

With the win the Cardinals are now 1-0 overall on the season, while the Flyers fall to 0-1 overall on the season. Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 3) when they travel to St. Joseph's.  Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
