Cardinals Tie #13 Ashland in Double Overtime, 1-1

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team tied #13 Ashland in double overtime today (Oct. 3), 1-1 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.

The Cardinals came out strong scoring their only goal at the 6:42 mark when junior Andrew Burgeson (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica Eisenhower) free kicked the ball to freshman Zach Walega (Saline, Mich.) who headed it in for his fifth goal of the season.  Ashland scored their only goal of the game with just two minutes remaining in the first half of play to knot the score at one for the remainder of the match.

Saginaw Valley along with Ashland would both put up three shots in the second half of play but would not capitalize on any of them.  Both ten minute overtimes remained scoreless as the game ended in a 1-1 tie for the GLIAC rivals. Head coach Cale Wassermann stated, "GLIAC games are always a battle and that is exactly what today was. We went to Ashland on a very cold and windy day and had to play a very good team at their home field. We were not satisfied with our possession of the ball, but did create some good chances. Both teams fought hard through two overtimes and I was proud of our team's work rate. We go into every game with the mentality to win the game and that is the only result that will satisfy us but we did get a point off of a nationally ranked opponent who is undefeated in our conference so we will take that and look to keep improving for when we see them at our place in a few weeks."

Senior goaltender Piotr Kamzmierczak (Stargard, Poland) faced three shots on goal today, saving two of them.  Kamzmierczak is now 6-3-2 overall on the season in net for Saginaw Valley.

With the win the Cardinals move to 6-3-2 overall on the season, and 3-2-2 in the GLIAC, while Ashland moves to 7-2-1 overall on the season, and 5-0-1 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will be back in action when they travel to Rochester University on Friday (Oct. 8).  Game time is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
