Saginaw Valley Ties Northwood in Double Overtime, 1-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team tied today (Sept. 22) in their rematch against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) rival Northwood University, 1-1 in double overtime.

The Cardinals tacked one on the board first as freshman Noah Sawyer (East Lansing, Mich. / Haslett HS) found the back of the net at the 4:29 mark off a pass from freshman Lachlan Savage (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth Salem).  The goal was Sawyer's third of the season and Savage's second assist for Saginaw Valley.  The Cardinals carried the 1-0 advantage over the Timberwolves into halftime.

Saginaw Valley allowed Northwood seven shots in the second half, one of which they would capitalize on to knot the score at one each.  Both ten minute overtime periods remained scoreless as the game ended in a 1-1 tie for the GLIAC rivals.

Senior goaltender Piotr Kazmierczak (Stargard, Poland) stopped seven shots on goal in the contest and is now 4-3-1 overall on the season.  Coach Cale Wassermann said, "It was a tough game for us today.  Playing mid-week games in between weekend doubleheaders leaves little time for training and recovery. It was a hard fought game against a team who is very physical and very direct, which goes against our style.  We were disappointed to not get the win, but it is encouraging to be unbeaten in our last three games heading into the weekend. Hopefully we can move forward and have a strong showing versus Davenport".

With the tie, the Cardinals' record moves to 4-3-1 overall on the season and 2-2-1 in the GLIAC, while Northwood moves to 3-2-2 overall on the season and 1-2-2 in the GLIAC.  Saginaw Valley will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 25) to take on Davenport University.  Game time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
