Cardinals Defeat Dragons, 2-1

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team tabbed their first GLIAC (Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Coneference) win under head coach Cale Wassermann today (Sept. 17) when they defeated Tiffin, 2-1.

The Cardinals fought hard through the first half of the game having the 1-0 advantage going into halftime.  Freshman Cedric Daley (Montego, Jamaica) netted his first career goal off a pass from senior Anthony Palazzolo (Warren, Mich. / De La Salle HS) at the 5:49 mark in the first half.

Saginaw Valley took the 2-0 lead early in the second half of play when freshman Zach Walega (Saline, Mich.) found the back of the net off a pass from Palazzolo.  Tiffin tried to come back late in the second off of a pentalty kick but it would not be enough to win the contest.

Senior goaltender Piotr Kazmierczak (Stargard, Poland) faced 12 shots on goal, saving 11 of them to give him his third win of the season, while Palazzolo ended the day with two assists.  Head coach Cale Wassermann stated, "Todays game was a true test for our young team against a program who won back to back conference championships. We fought hard for 90 minutes and our whole team contributed as we got the result we were looking for. Its a big win and we hope to continue getting better every game as the season progesses".

With the win Saginaw Valley improves to 3-3-0 overall on the season, and 1-2 in the GLIAC, while Tiffin falls to 6-3-1 overall on the season, and 2-2-1 in the GLIAC.  The Cardinals will be back in action when they take on Findlay University on Sunday (Sept. 19).  The game is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.
