BAY CITY, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State
University men’s soccer team received six points and was
selected to share the fourth place position with the University of
Findlay in the annual Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (GLIAC) coaches’ preseason poll. The Cardinals
finished last season with an overall record of 8-10-2 (2-6 GLIAC),
good enough for fourth in 2008 GLIAC play. The Cardinals look to
make huge improvements in the preseason and surprise, even upset,
their conference opponents in the upcoming season.
The head men’s soccer coaches of the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) chose Ashland
University, defending regular season champions, to win the 2009
GLIAC men’s soccer title in preseason balloting.
The league’s head coaches participated in the balloting, but
were not allowed to vote for their team. The first-place team on
each ballot received four points, while second received three
points, etc.
The Eagles earned a total of 15 points and three first-place
votes, narrowly edging out 2008 GLIAC champion Tiffin University,
which tallied two-first-place votes and 14 points. Ashland, after
finishing first in the 2008 GLIAC regular-season play, fell in the
first round to fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State University in the
GLIAC Tournament semifinals.
Northwood University finished third in the voting with nine
points. The Timberwolves ended the 2008 campaign with a 4-4 league
record and a #3 seed in the conference tournament.
Tiffin claimed the GLIAC’s men’s soccer postseason
tournament in 2008. The second-seeded Dragons defeated Northwood
4-2 in the semifinal match. The No. 4 seed Saginaw Valley bested
No. 1 Ashland in the other semifinal match. Tiffin then posted a
4-2 victory over Saginaw Valley in the GLIAC championship
match.
GLIAC men’s soccer teams open play on Thursday, August 27
with conference play beginning Sunday, September 13. The 2009
Men’s Soccer Championship Tournament will be held on Nov. 5
& 7 on the campus of the No. 1 seed.
