UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University athletic department and Athletics Director Mike Watson have announced the hiring of former SVSU standout Cale Wassermann as the head coach of the Cardinal men's soccer program. Wassermann comes to SVSU from Lewis University, a Division II school that competes in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). He will begin his duties in early January.

"I am very pleased that a thorough and extensive search has led us to a new head coach in Cale Wassermann, who I am confident will help us accomplish our goal of competing for championships. I am impressed by the qualities he brings to the table, his knowledge of the GLIAC, and his desire to succeed. We're proud to welcome him back to the Cardinal family", said SVSU Athletics Director Mike Watson.

Wassermann was an assistant coach at Lewis University for the men's soccer team the past two seasons. In 2009, he helped coach the Flyers to an NCAA DII Final Four appearance, the schools first since the 2000 season.

“Being an alumnus of Saginaw Valley, Cale knows the program very well, knows the school’s history and what it takes to be successful there. He has a great energy about him and he’ll be a great addition to the University. There’s no doubt in my mind that (Saginaw’s) men’s soccer program is in good hands,” commented Lewis head soccer coach Evan Fiffles.

In 2006 and 2007, Wassermann was a volunteer assistant for the men's soccer team at Saginaw Valley State, focusing on player development. He has worked multiple camps in Michigan, including the Tom Anagnost Soccer Camp, the state's biggest soccer camp. In 2006, he served as the head coach of the junior varsity boy's soccer team at Saginaw Heritage High School.

Wassermann was the head trainer for the 2008 Saginaw Sting U-17 Boys travel team and Saginaw Township Soccer Association youth teams.

Wassermann played four years of soccer at Saginaw Valley State University, graduating in 2007 with a bachelor's of arts degree in Communication. He was named First Team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 2004 and 2005.

After college, Wassermann spent four months traveling. He attended professional soccer matches in Argentina as well as traveling to Uruguay, Venezuela, and Israel. In high school, he was named first team All-State twice.

Wassermann, who recently received his United States Soccer Federation National Coaching License, is pursuing a master's of arts in organizational leadership with a focus in higher education at Lewis.
