BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program competed for the GLIAC Championship on Sunday. The Cardinals faced Wayne State in a five-player match play round at Bedford Valley Golf Course. SVSU fell 4-1 to WSU, finishing the GLIAC tournament in second place.
Thomas Keyte won the only matchup for Saginaw Valley, shooting a 72 (E) to defeat Josh DiCarlo by two strokes. Keyte led for the final eight holes, carding four birdies, four bogeys, and 10 pars.
Shea Harmeson recorded the best round for SVSU with a 70 (-2) but was paired against Luc Warnock, who shot a 67 (-5). Harmeson tallied a team-high six birdies and won five holes, holding a lead during the front nine.
Evan Klein also shot a 72 (E) and was matched up against Max Leppelmeier, who carded a 68 (-4) for the Warriors. Klein fell behind on the first hole and was unable to climb back, winning four holes along the way.
Jiseung Choi led for the first four holes in his matchup against Tyler Hurtubise but ultimately fell after posting a round of 74 (+2) compared to Hurtubise's 69 (-3). Choi recorded one birdie, three bogeys, and parred 14 holes in the final round. Joey Per also held an early lead in his pairing against Ian Smith but finished with a 77 (+5) to Smith's 72 (E).
Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's golf finishes in second place in the GLIAC, their best finish since 2005 when they won the conference tournament. They await the NCAA DII Regional selection to see if they will compete in team or individual play. Eighty teams will be selected, along with top individuals from non-qualifying teams, to participate in the regional tournament.
