Men’s Golf Falls in Semifinals in GLIAC Championships

AUGUSTA, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's golf program continued the GLIAC Championships on Saturday at Stoatin Brae Golf Club in Augusta, Michigan. The Cardinals entered the day in fifth out of nine teams and improved to fourth after shooting 288 as a team through 18 holes clinching the fourth spot in semifinals of match play. The Cardinals matched against Grand Valley and fell in the semifinals losing three of the pairings, wining one, and tying one.

In the second round of stroke play, Ethan Swenson led SVSU shooting one under on the day with a round of 70. He moves to tied eighth overall out of 45 golfers. Thomas Keyte followed as he shot even par with a round of 71. Remy Stalcup shot 73 in the second round with Joey Per shooting 74 to round out the team scoring. Shea Harmeson finished Saturday with a round of 75.

As a team, SVSU sits third on par fours and fourth on par fives as they average 4.13 on par fours and are shooting three under with an average of 4.93 on par fives. The Cardinals sit in the middle of the pack on total pars but moved into second overall for birdies with 23. Swenson's strong day moved him up the ladder on par fours to tied for first shooting two under. Harmeson is shooting two under on par fives and is tied fifth overall. Per leads SVSU in pars and sits tied for sixth overall with 25 through 36 holes. Stalcup is tied third with seven birdies with Keyte and Swenson just behind with six each.

In the semifinals, the Cardinals played match play against Grand Valley. Swenson finished with a round of 70 to win his match by one stroke. Per tied his match as he and Cooley of Grand Valley shot 73. Stalcup shot a round of 70 but trailed by three strokes. Keyte shot 72 but fell by two strokes. Harmeson shot a 77 but was beat by a round of 70 to end the scoring in the semifinals.

Men's golf finished their season with some of their best play. A successful push in round two led to a close defeat in the semifinals to Grand Valley.
