UNIVERSITY CENTER -- Saginaw Valley State University Men's and Women's Golf Head Coach Joe Vogl has announced the addition of assistant coach Matt Pumford to the Cardinal coaching staff for the upcoming 2019-20 season.
Pumford joins the Cardinals after serving as the head coach at Freeland High School the past two years. He was named the Division 3 "Coach of the Year" in 2019 after leading the Falcons to their highest-ever finish of third at the MHSAA Championships. Freeland claimed the Tri Valley Conference title each of the past two seasons as well.
"I am extremely excited for the addition of Matt to the staff," stated Vogl. "He brings many years of experience as a top level player and coach. I'm looking forward to working with him in just a few short weeks."
Pumford was a Men's Golf student-athlete at Michigan State University from 1994-99. After his time playing for the Spartans, Matt played professionally for two years on mini tours. He is a six-time winner of the Saginaw District Championship Tournament.
Pumford earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State 1999 in Kinesiology and a master's degree of Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University in 2007.
He is a teacher at Bay City Public Schools at MacGregor Elementary, teaching Physical Education.
Matt resides in Freeland with his wife Lacosta and three daughters, Olivia, Grace and Averie.
