Cardinals Claim Championship at Ohio Valley

MARIETTA -- The Saginaw Valley State University Men's Golf team came out on top in Sunday's one day, 36-hole OVU Highland Cup Challenge. The Cardinals broke the 36 hole program record, carding rounds of 285-276 to finish with a one-over tally of 561, 12 shots clear of Malone University for the championship. The score of 561 broke the previous mark of 573. 

Gunnar Stein was the medalist for the Cards, posting rounds of 67-70 to finish three-under. Right behind him was tournament runner-up Ryan Peruski, who had rounds of 71-67 to finish at two-under par.

Mason Motte had a top five finish for SV, bouncing back from a first round 75 to shoot a 65 to finish at even par for the tournament in fifth place. His 65 matched a school record as well for the Cardinals, joining Bob Stephens (1984) and Jonathan Lange (2009) with the round. 

Austin Carter tied for 7th place overall after carding rounds of 72-74 and Dustin Pumford ended up tied for 23rd with his scores of 76-76. 

Stein, Peruski, Motte and Carter all made the All-Tournament team for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley travels to play in the Wayne State Invitational to round out the fall schedule. It is set to take place Sunday through Monday at the TPC Michigan Golf Course in Dearborn, Michigan.
