Cardinals Suffer Setback at Lake Superior State

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team dropped a 77-69 result to Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon.

Toodles Seal extended his streak of 20+ point games to eight to lead the Cardinals (13-11, 6-9 GLIAC) in scoring. Seal added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals to his totals.

Seal hit the first bucket of the game with a three-point jumper in the opening minute. The Lakers responded with a shot from distance to knot things up before Tre Garrett made a layup that sparked a 7-0 run that gave SVSU 10-3 with 15:02 left in the opening half.

A shot from beyond the arc by LSSU cut the Cardinal lead to 13-11, but Seal hit a layup and Kevonne Taylor added another along with an and-one to remain ahead 18-11 with 9:36 left on the clock.

The Lakers rallied with a 7-0 run to flip the advantage to 23-22 with 6:02 left in the period. Maurice Anderson hit a shot from three to recapture the lead, but LSSU flipped the edge again with back-to-back layups before ending the half with a 9-0 run that put the score at 39-29, Lakers as the teams went into the locker room at the break.

Taylor had a big first half for the Cardinals as he shot 6-9 from the field for a team-high 13 points and six rebounds.

The Lakers pushed the lead to 15 points in the opening five minutes of the second half (47-32). Garrett made a layup that ignited a 9-0 run to bring the Cardinals to six down, 47-41, with 13:37 remaining in regulation.

Anderson drilled a three and Freddie McIntosh followed with a jumper to bring the margin to 54-50 with just under eight minutes left to play.

The Cardinals made one final push with a 10-2 run that put the score within one possession, 63-60, at the 3:54 mark, but the clock ran out before SVSU could get any closer.

Taylor's final tally was 13 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks for his first double-double of the season. Garrett finished with 12 points and four assists. McIntosh added nine points and contributed five rebounds and two steals.
