Men’s Basketball Falls to Findlay

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State men's basketball team fell 85-73 to Findlay inside James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena on Tuesday night. Junior Tre Garrett led the Cardinals with 19 points and nine rebounds in the losing effort.

Garrett made 11 of his team-leading points at the free-throw line as he finished 11-14 from the charity stripe and 4-9 from the floor. Junior Jiovanni Miles tallied 16 points and three rebounds, while red-shirt freshman Kevonne Taylor matched his season-high 11 points on 5-8 shooting. Taylor was also active in the paint as he hauled in eight rebounds.

The game started close as the teams traded leads up to a deadlock at 30 with 6:06 left in the first half of play. A 9-0 run for the Oilers chewed up 3:19 on the clock, but the Cardinals responded with a three-point jumper from Miles that ignited six-straight points to end the first half with a 39-36 score in favor of the visitors.

Garrett was 3-4 in free throws before Taylor hit a jumper that knotted things up at 41 with 18:17 left in regulation. Seven-straight points allowed Findlay to pull ahead 50-42 at the 15:54 mark. SVSU continued to battle, and a clutch three-pointer from Miles tied the game at 66 with just over six minutes remaining. The Oilers generated an 11-0 run to seal the victory in the closing minutes of the contest.
