Panthers take down Cardinals in Thursday night action, 76-39

CALEDONIA -- The Cardinal Men's Basketball team hit the road for a GLIAC contest at Davenport on Thursday (Jan. 16) evening. The Panthers led throughout the entire contest, claiming a 76-39 win over SVSU in the league matchup. 

The Panthers got out to a quick 8-0 lead and got it to double-digits with 11:55 showing on the clock and the score 14-3. Despite the Cardinals trimming the deficit to six points at 17-11 on a Myles Belyeu layup, Davenport led by as many as 18 points with the score 35-17 with 1:57 to play in the half. SVSU would score the final four points of the half with two Belyeu freebies and a Fred John Jr. layup, trimming the deficit to 36-23 heading into the halftime break.

Belyeu had seven points and four rebounds to lead the visitors through the first 20 minutes of action. Malik Ellison, John and Delano Smith all added four points as well.  

SVSU hit on just 7-of-20 shots from the floor and was 0-8 from three-point land in the first half. Davenport shot 42.9% (12-28) and hit on 5-of-15 from downtown. 

The second half continued on to remain in DU's favor, as the home team outscored Saginaw Valley by a 40-16 count in the second half to claim a 76-39 win.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Belyeu was the only Cardinal in double-figures, scoring 14 points to go along with a game-high rebounds. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • Ellison addeed seven points and four rebounds.
  • Delano Smith had six points, four rebounds, two blocks and an assist.

Saginaw Valley returns home on Saturday (Jan. 18) to host No. 15 Grand Valley State University. Tip-off for that matchup is set for 3:00 p.m. at SVSU's O'Neill Arena.
