GRAND RAPIDS -- The SVSU Men's Basketball team traveled to face the Davenport University Panthers on Saturday, taking on a squad that was receiving votes in the latest NABC Top 25 poll. After big games from Darnell Hoskins Jr. and Myles Belyeu, the Cardinals pushed Davenport but couldn't come out ahead in double overtime and fell by a 94-86 margin.
The first half remained tight throughout, with Saginaw Valley eventually carrying a slim 32-31 lead into the halftime break. Lachlan Anthony had three triples to lead the way offensively in the opening 20 minutes while Belyeu had seven points. James Toohey and Liam Evans each grabbed five first half rebounds.
The Cardinals built their largest lead of the game at 12 points (58-46) with 8:35 remaining in the contest when Hoskins nailed a triple.
At the end of regulation, the Cardinals led 72-71 but the game was knotted at 72-72 after DU hit on a free throw try.
A buzzer-beater shot from Hoskins went in-and-out, ending regulation and sending the game to the first overtime session.
The game remained tight and the Panthers led 79-77 with 50 seconds remaining in OT. Myles Belyeu was able to knot the game at 79-all with a pair of free throws as 37 seconds showed on the clock. The visitors had another chance with a last-second shot, but that fell no good and the game went to double overtime tied at 79-79.
Davenport was able to separate in the second overtime session, taking an 89-81 lead with 2:57 to play. The Panthers were able to close-out from there, eventually claiming the win by a score of 94-86.
Inside the Boxscore
- Hoskins hit 7-10 from downtown and posted a team-high 27 points in the game. He added two boards and three assists while being named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
- Belyeu added 23 points with six assists and five rebounds for the Cardinals.
- Lachlan Anthony had nine points in the first half on three deep made shots.
- Liam Evans had a team-best nine boards and six points.
- Fred John Jr. netted eight points and six rebounds for SV.
- Davenport hit on 47.3% of its shots while SVSU was 40.3% from the floor.
- The Cards had a 43-40 edge on the glass while DU had a 30-26 advantage in the paint.

The Cardinals are in action again on the road at Ashland University on Thursday (Jan. 17). They will tip at 7:30 p.m. against the No. 6-ranked Eagles in Ohio.
