Lakers Outlast Cardinals 70-62 In GLIAC Action

SAULT STE. MARIE — The SVSU Men's Basketball team traveled up north to face GLIAC team member, Lake Superior State Thursday evening. The Cardinals fell in a close contest against the Lakers, 70-62, heading to a 2-6 overall record. 

With a tight back and forth contest for the first 15 minutes, the Cardinals knotted up 27-all against the Lakers with five minutes to go in the first half, but was unable to regain the lead. 

At the halftime break, Saginaw Valley only trailed by two, with Fred John Jr. leading the way with 10 points. Reserve Liam Evans posted eight points as well, leaving the Cards down 37-35. 

The Cardinals battled back tying the contest again with 12 minutes remaining in the contest with a good bucket from Myles Belyeu, tying the score 44-44. 

James Toohey was 3-of-5 in field goals in the second half, leading the team with 10 points.  CJ Wilson added seven points while recording two boards. The team shot 80% from the charity stripe, but it was not enough to pull ahead in the end. 

The Cardinals fell 70-62 to the LSSU Laker squad, leaving one GLIAC contest left before the holiday break.  

Inside the Box Score: 

  • Toohey earned Meijer Player of the Game honors after posting the team-high 18 points, while adding three boards and one block. 
  • John Jr. added 10 points and four boards on the night. 
  • Beleyu recorded the team-high eight boards and eight points. 
  • Evans earned two steals and 10 points off the bench. 
  • Wilson posted 12 points and two assists.

The Cardinals will head to the west side of the state to face the 2017 National Champions, Ferris State. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 97-78 win over the Northwood Timberwolves earlier Thursday night. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. following the women's action which is set for 1 p.m. in Jim Wink Arena.
