BIG RAPIDS -- The Cardinal Men Basketball team traveled to play the No. 2 team in the country in Ferris State on Wednesday (Feb. 28) night in the 2018 GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Despite a solid offensive output for the Cards, Ferris State was too much and would pull away with a 113-84 victory at Wink Arena. 

Saginaw Valley held an early lead of three points at the 18:38 marker after a layup from Fred John Jr but the Bulldogs responded and reclaimed the lead early on in the opening half.

The Cardinals kept the deficit within single digits all the way until the 12:09 marker, as that's when FSU made the score 23-13. 

Ferris State kept extending the first half lead from there, leading by as many as 25 points a pair of times, the second coming with 2:54 showing on the clock and the score 50-25. The Bulldogs would head into the locker room leading by a 52-31 count.

Mike Wells Jr. led the way offensively for the Cards, scoring 11 points while playing all 20 minutes. DJ Hoskins added six points while James Toohey had four, with both playing the entire opening half as well. 

Saginaw Valley would trim the lead down to 18 points early on in the second when Toohey hit a triple with 18:09 left on the clock.

That is as close as the Cardinals would get the rest of the way, as the Bulldogs opened up a 32-point lead en route to sealing the victory by the 113-84 final.

• Wells earned Meijer "Player of the Game" plaudits in his final contest for the Cardinals. The senior guard went for team-highs of 17 points, seven rebounds and five assists. He played in all 40 minutes Wednesday against the Bulldogs. 
• Fred John Jr. added 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting with two rebounds, as assist, steal and block.
• Toohey netted 12 points with four boards, three assists, a steal and block.
• Hoskins contributed 10 points with four helpers, a pair of boards and a steal. 
• Sebastiano Lamonato matched Wells's team-best seven rebounds and added nine points of his own with a pair of blocks. 
• Malik Garner netted nine points as well for SV.

Up Next...

The setback closes-out the 2017-18 campaign for the Cardinals, who graduate just a pair of players. Wells and fellow senior LaDell Hickman will be the only two student-athletes departing from this year's roster.
