UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The Cardinal men's basketball team hosted the Tiffin University Dragons on Saturday (1/20) night and came away with a decisive 17-point victory by a score of 86-69 at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.
Saginaw Valley was hot from long range for the game, connecting on a new program record 17 three-pointers to beat the old record of 15, which happened three times in the past. Freshman James Toohey led the charge for the Cards, hitting on eight of those triples while scoring a game and career-high 26 points in the effort. That figure of eight is one shy of the single game record of nine as well.
The Cardinals opened up the contest down and trailed by a 14-8 margin, which marked the largest lead of the afternoon for the Dragons.
SVSU responded from there, going on an 11-0 run to take a 19-14 advantage at the 9:33 point after a three-pointer from DJ Hoskins. The Cardinals built the lead out to 11 points (31-20) with 3:28 showing for the half and would take a 39-30 lead into the half after Hoskins hit another triple.
Saginaw Valley continued to dominate throughout from there in the second half, working a lead as large as 28 points (66-38) with 10:42 to play after Jeremy Pung used a nice feed from Sebastiano Lamonato and slammed one home for the Cards.
The home squad would close out down the stretch and continue on for the 89-68 victory, collecting their third straight win and seventh home win of the season.
Inside the Box Score:
- Toohey worked 37 minutes of action on the floor, hitting eight triples and scoring a career-high 26 points while grabbing seven rebounds. He earned Meijer "Player of the Game" honors for this stellar performance.
- Mike Wells Jr. stayed hot as well, hitting 6-of-7 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from deep for 19 points. He added six assists on the afternoon.
- Hoskins played well also for SVSU, going for 18 points while hitting four triples. He added a pair of boards and two assists as well.
- Lamonato had seven boards as well while adding four points and three helpers.
- Saginaw Valley shot a solid 60.4% from the field and 63.0% from beyond the arc while Tiffin shot 35.9% overall.
