Cardinals fall at Wayne State in Thursday action, 74-57

DETROIT -- The SVSU Men's Basketball team traveled to Detroit to take on the Wayne State University Warriors on Thursday (1/11) evening in a GLIAC matchup. The Cardinals, after trailing by a 33-29 margin at the half, fell by a final count of 74-57 at the Matthaei Center. 

Fred John Jr. scored the first four points for the visitors and gave the Cards a 4-2 lead at the 17:15 marker of the first half. The Cardinals' last lead of the contest came with 13:48 left in the first when Sebastiano Lamonato made good on a layup attempt to give them a 10-8 lead. 

The Warriors grabbed the lead back from there and pushed it to double-digits at 22-12 at the 8:14 point of the half. 

Another Lamonato bucket capped-off a 7-0 SVSU run with 2:02 left in the half to cut the deficit to three points with the score 30-27 in WSU's favor. 

Wayne State would maintain the lead from there and headed into the locker room with a 33-29 edge.

The home squad pushed the lead back out to 10 points (44-34) with 14:36 showing in the second half and would eventually continue on to claim the 17-point victory, 74-57.

  • Mike Wells Jr. had another game-high point performance for the Cardinals, going for 22 points with three rebounds, an assist and steal. 
  • John registered 10 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. He added an assist and matched his career-high with two blocks. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
  • DJ Hoskins added seven points with a career-high six boards, one assist and a steal.
  • Lamonato added eight points for SVSU. 
  • Wayne State shot 41.8% from the field while SVSU went 35.0%.
  • Each team grabbed 41 rebounds in the contest. 
  • The Warriors posted a 42-32 advantage in the paint. 
  • The Cardinals had 23 turnovers while Wayne State had 12.

The Cardinals return home to O'Neill Arena on Saturday (1/13) for the first of four consecutive home games. SVSU faces Davenport University in a 6:00 p.m. contest. That game will follow the women's game, which begins at 4:00 p.m. The Panthers fell at home to Northwood by a score of 57-52 on Thursday night.
