Cardinals claim victory at Northwood, 64-53

MIDLAND -- The Cardinal Men's Basketball team traveled to Northwood University on Saturday (Dec. 16) night for a GLIAC matchup. SVSU posted an 11-point victory over the Timberwolves, scoring 32 points in each half to claim the 64-53 win. 

Saginaw Valley carried a 32-23 lead into the halftime break and outscored the T-Wolves by a narrow 32-30 margin in he second half. Sebastiano Lamonato paced the way in the opening 20 minutes with 10 points and three rebounds. Malik Garner added 11 points in the second frame, adding two boards and an assist as well. 

In the game that had just one tie and seven lead changes, the Cardinals led by their largest margin with 1:21 to play in the game with the score at 60-47. The Cardinals shot 44.2% (23-52) from the floor while Northwood was 19-of-50 for a 38.0% clip. SVSU out-rebounded NU by a 38-27 margin and scored 15 points off 14 Timberwolf turnovers. Saginaw Valley held the advantage in points in the paint as well, 30-24. The Cardinal bench had a 23-9 edge in scoring.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Lamonato had a team-high 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He added five rebounds as well. 
  • James Toohey added 11 points with a game-high six rebounds. Both figures are career-highs for the freshman. He added two assists and a steal. 
  • Garner finished the night with 11 points, tallying three rebounds and two assists as well. 
  • Liam Evans matched his early career-high with 10 points in the contest. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."

The Cardinals host Rochester College at O'Neill Arena on Tuesday (Dec. 19) night. Tip-off will be at 7:00 p.m. in the non-conference tilt.
