Cardinals Drop Regular Season Finale to Hillsdale, 72-62

University Center, Mich. -  The 16th-ranked SVSU men's basketball team hosted Hillsdale College on Thursday night in their last GLIAC regular reason matchup of the 2015-16 season. The Cardinals couldn't overcome a slow start and 39-26 halftime deficit and would drop the contest by a final score of 72-62 to the Chargers. 

The Chargers pulled ahead 10-0 in the first two minutes of the first half to take the quick advantage.

Garrett Hall put the Cardinals on the board with a layup at the 17:32 minute mark, cutting the lead to eight but Hillsdale took the lead to 13 with a three-pointer form Zach Miller. 

At the 14:24 minute mark, Sterling Johnson made a layup to cut the lead down to 11 points (17-6).

Kyle Cooper would extend Hillsdale's lead out to 16 points (22-6) with 13 minutes left in the half following a triple and two free throws. 

Mitchell Baenziger notched a layup, followed by two free throws from Damon Bozeman to cut the lead to 12, 22-10 at the 10:39 mark.

The Cardinals made the score 24-15 after a layup from Kellen Smith and a triple from Hall with 8:04 showing on the clock. Bozeman added another layup to cut the deficit to seven, 24-17 with 6:43 to go in the half. 

Hillsdale led by 16 points a pair of times from there, the second time coming with the score 39-23 and 1:47 on the clock. A three-point play from Bozeman would end the scoring for the half, dropping the deficit to 13 points as the home team entered the locker room trailing, 39-26.

In the second half SV scored seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to eight points (41-33) at the 16:48 mark. Turnage made a layup, followed by Bozeman with a layup and free throw and Hall with a tip-in to make the score 41-33.

After a basket from Stedman Lowry put Hillsdale up by 10, Smith made a layup and Bozeman posted three more baskets, putting the Cardinals within two at 43-41 with 14:26 to play. Saginaw Valley came back within two points of the Chargers twice more after shots from Devin Dixon (45-43) and Turnage (47-45) at the 12:38 and 11:11 minute marks, respectively.

The Chargers extended their lead up to 13, 61-48, with 6:40 left in the game after an eight point run.

Hall and Wade Gelhaus each made a layup, dropping the Charger lead down to nine, 65-56 with 2:35 remaining.

Two free throws each from Kyle Cooper and Zach Miller put Hillsdale up by 13 with 1:15 on the clock.

Bozeman hit a three, followed by Adams with a layup, cutting the lead to eight, 69-61, with 45 seconds left.

A Kyle Cooper dunk puched the lead back out to 11 points (72-61) for Hillsdale with just 24 seconds left. Hall made a free throw with 11 seconds on the clock, ending the game with Hillsdale ahead by a score of 72-62.

Inside the Boxscore 

  • Bozeman led the Cardinals with 19 points, shooting 7-of-17 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. He added six rebounds, two steals and an assist.
  • Hall posted 16 points, a team-high seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Turnage and Adams contributed six points each. Turnage posted four rebounds and Adams adding one rebound and a steal.
  • Smith added six rebounds, four points, two steals, one assist and a block.
  • Saginaw Valley shot 37.1% (26-of-70) while Hillsdale shot 26-of-55 (47.3%) from the floor.
  • SV made 44 points in the paint compared to Hillsdale's 38.
  • The Chargers out-rebounded the Cardinals by a 41-35 count.
  • Hillsdale never trailed in the contest.

Meijer "Player of the Game"

Bozeman was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after scoring his team-high 19 points, adding six rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Up Next for SVSU

The Cardinals finished the 2015-16 regular season campaign by sharing the overall GLIAC Championship and now enter the 2016 GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. SVSU hosts No. 8 seeded Walsh University, which is coming off an 80-68 road victory at Malone Thursday night. SV defeated the Cavaliers in the teams' only meeting earlier this year, a 94-89 decision on January 3rd.
