Men's Basketball Notches Sixth Straight in 81-69 Victory at Lake Erie

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU men's basketball team defeated Lake Erie in a GLIAC matchup in Painesville, Ohio on Saturday (Dec. 19) afternoon. After a tight first 20 minutes where the Cardinals trailed by four points (38-34), the Cardinals posted a 47-31 advantage in the second half and claimed their sixth straighe victory, 81-69.

The Cardinals took an early lead, scoring nine points in the first four minutes for a 9-2 edge at the 16:47 marker of the game.

Lake Erie took its first lead of the contest at 12-11 with 12:13 showing on the clock and the Storm would lead by as many as 11 points with 5:33 to play in the first half when the score was 30-19 in the home team's advantage.

The Cards would knot the score at 32-32 when Mike Wells made good on a layup with 5:33 showing on the clock for the first half. 

The Storm, however, would grab the lead back and hold a 38-34 advantage heading into the break. 

A Damon Bozeman triple tied the score at 43-43 in the second half and he would cap-off a 10-0 run with a pair of free throws to make the score 50-43 at the 14:56 marker of the contest. 

The Cards would open up a 16-point lead with 5:49 left in the game when Devin Dixon made a layup to make the score 69-53. 

Saginaw Valley held on and would close-out for the league victory, 81-69.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Hall led the Cardinals with 18 points, shooting five-of-ten from the floor and six-of-eight in free throws. He added seven rebounds for the visitors.
  • Damon Bozeman and Caleb Davis each contributed 14 points. Davis recorded a season-high of nine rebounds while Bozeman added four with a steal.
  • Turnage added 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and a game-high two steals.
  • Kellen Smith posted a game and a season high of seven assists in the contest while Mike Wells had nine points.
  • Micthell Baenziger had eight points and added three boards in his 28 minutes off the bench for SVSU.
  • SVSU shot 52.8% (28-53) from the floor, while Lake Erie shot 39.4% (26-66).
  • Andy Bosley led the Storm with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Davis was selected as the Meijer "Player of the Game" after posting his 14 points and nine rebounds.

Up Next for SVSU

The Cardinals will be back in action next year when they host Malone University on Saturday, January 2nd, and Walsh University on Sunday, January 3rd. The Malone Pioneers (3-6, 0-4 GLIAC) are coming off a narrow (75-73) defeat from Lewis University at home. The Walsh Cavaliers (5-3, 3-1 GLIAC) are coming off a 71-63 victory at home against Cedarville on Wednesday (Dec. 16). Tip-off against the Pioners is at 3:00 pm on Saturday and the Cavaliers face off begins at 8:00 pm on Sunday evening.
