Cardinals Drop Home Contest To Ferris State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team returned home from a four-game road trip to take on Ferris State Univeristy Saturday night (Feb. 22) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) matchup.  The visiting Bulldogs prevailed over the Cardinals, 90-68.

SVSU falls to 5-15 in the GLIAC and 9-15 overall while FSU improves to 8-12 in the conference and 9-15 on the season.

The Bulldogs scored the first bucket of the night, giving them a 2-0 lead until a Kellen Smith three-pointer twenty seconds later gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead.  The early lead would turn out to be the only one of the night for the home team.

Two Caleb Davis free throws would tie the game up at 11-11 with 13:41 to play in the opening frame.  C.J. Turange layups at the 13:17, 12:50 and 7:42 marks would get the Cardinals within a single point, but the Bulldogs did not allow the score to get any closer before the first twenty minutes of play elapsed. Ferris State would enter halftime with a 44-35 advantage.

Turnage led the Cardinals with 12 points at the break.

Ferris State shot 52.9% (18-34) in the opening half, barely edging Saginaw Valley, which shot 50% (14-28) from the floor.

FSU would start the second half off on an 11-2 run, pushing its lead to 55-39 with 16:43 left to play.

Freshman Jon Marosi drained a three-pointer at the 10:22 mark to cut the Bulldog lead to 15, but that is as close as the Cardinals would come in the remaining minutes.  FSU continued pushing the margin before eventually closing out with a 90-68 win.

Caleb Davis finished the game with 12 points and four rebounds off the bench, earning him earning the Meijer "Player of the Game" honors.

Turnage scored a team-high 14 points while chipping in three rebounds, three assists and a block.

SVSU was out-shot by FSU 57.8% (37-64) to 50.0% (24-48) from the floor as well as 44.4% (8-18) to 31.8% (7-22) from beyond-the-arc in the contest.

The Cardinals are back in action Thursday (Feb. 27), as they take on Northwood at home on Senior Day at O'Neill Arena.  Tip is set for 8:00 pm.
