Cardinals Can't Overcome Strong Huskies Start In Defeat

HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State men's basketball team dropped a 15 point contest at Michigan Tech University Saturday (Feb. 15) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division matchup.

The loss drops the Cardinals to 5-13 in the GLIAC and 9-13 overall on the season while Michigan Tech improves to 14-5 in league play and 18-5 overall. 

C.J. Turnage started the game with a quick layup just 16 seconds in, giving SVSU a 2-0 lead.  It would be the only lead they held in the half. 

At the 5:52 mark, Luke Heller's field goal pushed the lead to 18 points, As Michigan Tech continued to extended it's lead going in to halftime. The Huskies would close-out leading 33-20 at the conclusion of the opening half.

Turnage led the team with eight points in the opening period.

SVSU shot 40.0% (10-25) from the floor while Michigan Tech shot 44.8% (13-29).

Austin Armga scored a quick bucket to start the second half for the Huskies, extending the lead to 15 points. A Garrett Hall three-point play got Saginaw Valley within 13 points with 15:06 left to play, but that is as close as they would get from there on out.

Michigan Tech scored just two points more than Saginaw Valley in the second half, but it was their first half margin that propeled them to the 68-53 win at home.

The Huskies barely edged the Cardinals for the battle on the boards, 33-32. SVSU finished the game shooting 46% (23-50) compared to MTU's 41.8% (23-55).

Turnage's 22 point effort to go along with eight rebounds earned him Meijer "Player of the Game" honors.

Garrett Hall finished the matchup with nine points and two rebounds.

The Cardinals are back in action Thursday (Feb. 20), as they complete their four-game road trip at Grand Valley. Tip is set for 8:00 pm in Allendale.
