Freshmen Lead SVSU To  Victory At Wayne State

DETROIT, Mich - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team posted a victory on the road at Wayne State in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest Saturday (Feb. 8). The 70-67 win was fueled by 23 point efforts from freshmen Garrett Hall and C.J. Turnage.

The victory improves the Cardinals to 4-12 in the conference and 8-12 on the season while the Warriors fall to 9-8 in the GLIAC and 11-9 on the year.

Turnage got the game rolling with an early jumper, giving the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. It would be their only lead of the first half.

Wayne State grabbed a lead and increased it to as many as 14 points in the opening frame before SVSU kicked their play in to high gear.

Two Hall free throws cut the Warrior lead to 31-30 with 2:06 to play in the half. Both teams exchanged jump shots before time expired and WSU would go into the break with a one point lead, 33-32.

SVSU shot 47.8% (11-23) from the floor and 42.9% (3-7) from three in the half.

Damon Bozeman began the second half with a quick three-pointer, giving the Cardinals their first lead since the opening minute. The Warriors would take the lead on the ensuing trip down the floor on a three-point play by Clark Bishop.

Wayne State would hold the lead until the 6:54 mark, when it changed hands due to a field goal by Turnage. SVSU would control the lead on their way to closing out the victory, 70-67.

Saginaw Valley shot 48.0% (24-50) from the field, while Wayne State shot just below that at 47.4% (27-57). The Cardinals also out-shot the Warriors from beyond-the-arc, shooting 46.7% (7-15) compared to the Warriors' 23.1% (3-13).

The freshman duo of Hall and Turnage accounted for 23 points-apiece.

Turnage was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" for his team-high tying 23 points, six rebounds, three assists, three rebounds and a steal.

Hall tied his career-high while adding eight rebounds and an assist to his night.

The Cardinals are back in action Thursday (Feb. 13) as they travel to take on Northern Michigan in a 7:30 pm contest.
