Cardinals Fall at North Division Contender Northwood, 80-58

MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team dropped an 80-58 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at Northwood University Monday evening (Feb. 3).

The loss drops the Cardinals to 3-11 in the GLIAC and 7-11 overall while the T-Wolves improve to 11-5 in the conference and 15-8 on the season.

Freshman Garrett Hall tied the game at 10 after hitting a three-pointer just before the first media timeout. Northwood came out of the breather with a 9-2 run before a Damon Bozeman layup cut the T-Wolves' lead to five with nine minutes remaining in the opening half.

C.J. Turnage energized the crowd with a dunk that made the score 26-20, but that is as close as the Cardinals would get in the first half as NU entered halftime with a 39-23 lead.

SVSU shot 35% (8-23) from the field in the first half, while NU made good on 41% (13-32) of its field goal attempts.

Hall would ignite Saginaw Valley in the second half, scoring 13 of the 17 Cardinal points in a six minute period in the second half. The scoring run was capped by a shot from beyond-the-arc to cut the Northwood lead to just nine with 8:43 left to play.

The home team would pull away in the closing minutes, earning them the 80-58 victory.

There were 11 different Cardinals put in game minutes in a game hat proved to be a true team effort.

Hall's 21 points, three rebounds and two steal effort earned him "Meijer Player of the Game" honors.

Turnage added 12 points and three rebounds in his 27 minutes of action.

SVSU finished the game shooting 39.6% (21-53) from the field and 35% (7-20) from three.

Northwood out-rebounded Saginaw Valley 44-24 in the matchup.

SVSU returns home on Thursday (Feb. 6) when the Lake Superior State University Lakers come to town. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm at O'Neill Arena.
