Cardinals Drop 73-57 Decision to GLIAC South Opponent Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team dropped a  Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest at Hillsdale College on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11) by a score of 73-57.

SVSU fell behind early by as many as 12 points with 13:21 to play in the first half, following 10 straight Charger points. A Vincent Adams layup ended the scoring drought and jump-started a dominating 23-0 Saginaw Valley run. The lead increased to 27-16 at the 6:59 mark before Hillsdale stopped the scoring spree on a Tim Dezelski bucket.

The Cardinals led by a score of 33-25 at the half.

Adams made every shot he attempted in the opening 20 minutes, shooting 6-6 from the field and added an assist, rebound and two steals.

C.J. Turnage and Garrett Hall each had six points of their own in the frame.

Hillsdale spent the first minutes of the second half chipping-away at the eight point halftime deficit. It took the home team 9:35 when a Zach Miller jumper tied the game at 45-45. A Dezelski layup 27 seconds later would give the Chargers their first lead since the opening minutes.

Hall re-gained the lead for the Cardinals at 54-53 after a three point field goal with 7:09 remaining. This would be the last lead for SVSU, as it would eventually fall by the final score of 73-57.

Adams, the Meijer "Player of the Game," finished the game with a career-high 14 points off of 7-of-8 shooting, adding three steals, two rebounds and an assist in 19 minutes of action.

Hall and Damon Bozeman each posted 11 points. Turnage followed closely with 10 points.

SVSU shot 42.6% (23-54) from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from three.

Hillsdale out-rebounded Saginaw Valley by a 34-27 margin while the Cardinals forced the Chargers into 18 turnovers.

Following the loss, SVSU falls to 5-7 overall and 1-7 in the GLIAC while Hillsdale improves to 9-3 on the season and 5-3 in the conference.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 16) as they travel to take on Lake Superior State University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 pm.
