SVSU Men Post Big Win Over Olivet In Season Opener

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The SVSU men's basketball team opened its regular season schedule on Friday night (Nov. 8) with a 92-50 victory over the Olivet College Comets.

Olivet (0-1) jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead on the Cardinals, but a Damon Bozeman three pointer and C.J. Turnage layup knotted the score at 7-7.  After the game was tied again at 10-10, SVSU grabbed the lead and never looked back.

SVSU held a 45-25 advantage at halftime, as the Cards shot 56.3% from the floor in the first half while holding the Comets to just a 32.1 field goal percentage.

The second half saw much of the same for the Cardinals, as SVSU out-scored Olivet by a count of 47-25.  The biggest lead of the game for SV came at the 3:57 mark, when a layup by Sterling Johnson made the score 90-45.

Saginaw Valley shot even better in the second frame, as the team posted a 66.7 shooting percentage on 18-of-27 shooting.

The Cardinals out-rebounded Olivet by a 42-35 margin.

Turnage was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" after finishing with 14 points, five rebounds and three assists on the night.

Junior forward Kalen Foreman also had 14 points for the Cards to go along with three boards.

Three other SVSU players reached double-figures in scoring, as sophomore Damon Bozeman had 12 points and a game-high six rebounds, sophomore Sterling Johnson had 11 and four rebounds and fellow sophomore Vincent Adams added 10 points.

With the win, the Cardinals are now 1-0 for the 2013-14 campaign.  SVSU has the rest of the weekend off before hosting Alma College on Monday (Nov. 11) in a 7:00 pm contest.
