UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team hosted the Adrian College Bulldogs in the team's second and final exhibition contest of the 2013-14 season. The Cardinals defeated Adrian by a score of 71-57 in the matchup.
The first half started off as a back and forth affair and the score was tied at 13-13 with 12:25 remaining in the period. The Cards would go on an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 21-13, featuring six straight points from sophomore Damon Bozeman.
The Cardinals led by as many as 15 in the first, but Adrian cut the lead to 40-29 heading into halftime.
Freshman Garrett Hall had a team-high 11 points at the 20 minute break while Bozeman also reached double-figures in the first half, adding 10 points.
SVSU shot 61.9% from the field in the opening period.
Saginaw Valley scored eight straight points to open the second half, capped-off by a three pointer from junior Lindsey Johnson to make the score 48-29.
The Cardinals' biggest lead of the night came at the 8:13 mark in the second, when a Hall layup gave SVSU a 63-43 lead. SVSU would continue on to close-out for the 14 point victory, 71-57.
Saginaw Valley shot 51% from the field for the contest and held the Bulldogs to just 39.3% from the floor. The Cards were 6-of-15 from beyond the arc as well, good enough for 40% from downtown.
Hall was the leading scorer for SVSU, notching a game-high 18 points while going 7-of-11 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from three.
Bozeman added 16 points, including going a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Freshman Calvin Turnage posted 14 points, going 7-of-9 from the floor.
Junior Kalen Foreman had a game-high 12 rebounds in leading SVSU to a 41-30 advantage on the glass.
Sophomore Kellen Smith had seven points and a game-high five assists.
SVSU is back in action on Friday (11/8), as it hosts Olivet College in the team's regular season opener. Tip-off is set for 7:00 pm in O'Neill Arena.
