Saginaw Valley Clipped by Ferris State, 64-59

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell to Ferris State University today (Feb. 4), 64-59. The Cardinals fall to 10-11 overall and 6-8 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 13-7 overall and 10-3 in the conferece.

Saginaw Valley came out strong off the jump ball as Mike Schaaf (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) went down the court and drained a three pointer to give the Cardinals a quick 3-0 lead in the opening seconds of the game.

The Cardinals went on a seven point run before the Bulldogs were able to score at the 18:00 minute mark making the score 7-2.

Ferris State gained control of the game at the 7:51 mark of the first half, but Saginaw Valley battled back and took the lead for good in the half when Meijer "Player of the Game" Eli Redman (Bath, Mich.) laid in a basket with just 3:21 to go until intermission.

The Cardinals took a 37-31 lead into the locker room after junior Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) made a three pointer with 1:29 left.

Redman and George Goodman (Saginaw, Mich./Buena Vista HS) led Saginaw Valley in the first half with 10 points each.

The Cardinals would again build a seven point lead over the Bulldogs, going up 47-40, when junior Rob Clark (Saginaw, Mich.) made a pair of free throws and Webb made a jump shot at the 12:54 mark of the second half.

The contest continued to go back and forth as both teams knotted the score at 59-59 with just 2:37 left of play. The Cardinals would be unable to regain control of the game as Ferris went on to a 64-59 victory.

Redman recorded his first career double-double, scoring a team high 18 points and pulling down 13 rebounds, while Webb ended the night with 11 points and five rebounds for the Cardinals.

Saginaw Valley will be back in action when they return home on Wednesday (Feb. 8) when they take on Northwood University. Tip off is scheduled for 8:00 pm
