Cardinals Tame Panthers, 83-79

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball picked up a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) victory today (1/29) after defeating the Panthers of Ohio Dominican, 83-79.  The win moves the Cardinals' overall record to 9-9 and improves their conference record to 5-7 overall on the season while Ohio Dominican falls to 4-14 overall on the season and 1-11 in GLIAC action.

Saginaw Valley took the lead at the 15:09 mark in the first half as sophomore Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) found an open three-pointer to give the Cardinals a 9-7 advantage they would hold throughout the remainder of the first half.  A pair of free-throws by sophomore Michael Fugate (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) would give Saginaw Valley an eight-point advantage at the 10:38 mark as the Cardinals would enter the locker room with the scoreboard reading 36-30 in SVSU's favor.

SVSU came out strong in the second half of action, gaining a ten-point advantage over the Panthers as sophomore guard Brett Beland (Menominee, Mich./Menominee HS) would connect on two free-throws with 11:55 remaining in the contest.  The Cardinals held their largest lead of the game at the 2:45 mark as junior Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind./T.C. Howe HS) made good on a free-throw to give SVSU a 12-point, 70-58 advantage.  Saginaw Valley would hold the lead throughout the remainder of the game and go onto victory, 83-79.

Leading the way for the Cardinals offensively was Webb who ended the afternoon with a game-high 19 points, three rebounds and had two steals while Beland finished the game with 18 points, two assists and pulled down one rebound.  Foster, who earned Meijer "Player of the Game" recognition finished with 17 points, eight assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Saginaw Valley will return to action next week (Feb. 3) as they host GLIAC-foe Grand Valley State University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 PM
