Cardinals Fall to Lake Superior Sate, 71-64

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team fell to Lake Superior State University (LSSU) today (Dec. 18), 71-64 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) contest.  With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 3-6 overall on the season and 0-4 in the GLIAC while the Lakers move to 7-3 overall on the season and 2-2 in conference play.

The Lakers would hold a 10-point advantage over the Cardinals, 30-20 with 4:27 remaining in the first half.  Saginaw Valley was able to cut the LSSU lead to just two points at halftime, entering the locker room with a score 33-31.  Junior Eli Redman (Bath, Mich./Bath HS) posted eight points and had three rebounds at the half for Saginaw Valley.

The Cardinals trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half, but managed to work their way back to a close score, bringing the Laker's lead to just five points with seconds left in the contest, however was unable to take the lead, falling 71-64.

Overall, the Cardinals were led by Redman, who earned Meijer "Player of the Game" recognition, finishing the afternoon with a team-high 17 points and had six rebounds.  Senior Dan Genther (Laingsburg, Mich./Laingsburg HS) and junior Michael Fugate (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) both posted 11 points as Fugate also added eight rebounds while senior Adam Roberts (Adrian, Mich./Madison HS) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

Saginaw Valley will return to action January 3, 2011 when they host the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
