Cardinals Defeat Wisconsin-Parkside, 66-65

MIDLAND, Mich. -  The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team started their 2010-11 season with a victory over Wisconsin-Parkside today (Nov. 19) 66-65.  With the win, the Cardinals move their overall record to 1-0 on the season while Wisconsin-Parkside falls to 0-2 overall on the season.

The Cardinals held a nine point advantage over the Rangers at the 13:52 mark in the first half on a successful three-point shot by junior guard Sean Romsek (Fowlerville, Mich./Fowlerville HS), however Wisconsin-Parkside would take the lead back, 17-16 with 9:04 remaining in the half.  Saginaw Valley held a two-point advantage at halftime, 35-33.

The second half was a back-and-forth battle as the Cardinals took a six-point lead as senior center Adam Roberts (Adrian, Mich./Madison HS) connected on two free-throws, however that lead would be taken away on a successful Ranger lay-up at the 10:19 mark in the second half.

With 1:25 remaining in the contest, the Rangers held a five-point advantage over the Cardinals, 62-57, however Saginaw Valley would begin to chip away at the lead and eventually re-gained control with seven seconds left in the game as as Meijer "Player of the Game" Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill HS) hit a three-point shot to take a one-point advantage over the Rangers.  Wisconsin-Parkside would get a final shot off, however came up short as the Cardinals went on to victory, 66-65.

Leading the way for the Cardinals was Webb who finished with a game-high 23 points, while sophomore guard Michael Fugate (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) added 12 points on the evening.

Saginaw Valley will return to action tomorrow (Nov. 20) as they host Rochester at 8:00 pm.
