Cardinals Defensive Lineman Jacob Spencer Drafted to CFL’s Edmonton Elks

EDMONTON – Saginaw Valley State University defensive lineman Jacob Spencer was selected in the eighth round of the Canadian Football League (CFL) draft by the Edmonton Elks.

Spencer is the seventh former Cardinal who is active with a professional football organization. The Brantford, Ontario native is the only former player from SVSU currently in the CFL. Spencer made 23 appearances for the Cardinals through three seasons. He amassed 25 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and 5.5 tackles for loss on the defensive line. 

"I'll always remember recruiting Jacob," said SVSU head football coach Ryan Brady. "He and his family are awesome people.  When I received the news that he had been drafted, It was pure excitement for Jacob and his family.  I know it's been his dream for a while, and now his dream of playing in the CFL is a reality.  Jacob has worked extremely hard, and he has had to overcome his share of adversity, and he has persevered through it all.  I wish Jacob all the best!  Edmonton just added a great one.  Good Luck Jacob."

The Edmonton Elks kick off the 75th season in club history at home on Saturday, June 8 against the Saskatchewan Roughriders inside Commonwealth Stadium located in Edmonton, Alberta.
