WEEK SEVEN: Cardinals ready for Axe Bowl on Homecoming

WEEK SEVEN: Cardinals ready for Axe Bowl on Homecoming
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University welcomes all Cardinal alumni, fans, former student-athletes, and supporters back to campus for the 2021 Homecoming Game. The SVSU football team is set to host rival Northwood University in the annual Axe Bowl at 2 PM Saturday at Wickes Stadium. All SVSU fans are encouraged to Wear Red for the RED OUT.

The Cardinals earned a huge road win in nonconference play last weekend, topping Texas A&M-Commerce 20-17 in overtime in a defensive battle.

The Cardinal defense stood tall for the majority of the contest, adding an interception returned for a score in the second half, as SVSU built a 14-3 lead. The Lions scored 10-unanswered points in the fourth quarter, tying the game as regulation ended on a field goal.

After Commerce took its first lead of the game on a field goal in overtime, Tommy Scott found a hole and cashed in from six yards out to give SVSU the win. The victory pushed SVSU to 3-3 overall (0-2 GLIAC).

The Cardinals lead the nation in takeaways this season with 20 and SVSU will look to continue its outstanding defensive play against the Timberwolves.

Northwood enters the Axe Bowl off of a 70-9 loss to No. 7 Grand Valley State University on the road last weekend. The Timberwolves are 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC
