Saginaw Valley Falls in Close GLIAC Matchup, 28-24

UNIVERSITY CENTER -- The SVSU Football team hosted Michigan Tech in a Saturday (Sep. 23) afternoon matchup at Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium. After holding a narrow halftime lead and two-score edge after three quarters, the Huskies went for a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to claim a 28-24 victory.

The Huskies scored the first points, taking a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

Saginaw Valley responded with 3:57 to play in the opening quarter, putting together an 11-play, 81 yard drive that was capped by a 13 yard touchdown pass play from Ryan Conklin to Marcus Edmondson.

SV extended the lead to 10-7 in the second, as the only points of the quarter came when Alex Kenrick drilled a 20 yard field goal with 7:38 to play in the half.

That same 10-7 count is what it remained at halftime. 

Michigan Tech took the lead in the third, scoring on a touchdown pass at the 9:48 marker to take a 14-10 edge.

The Cards bounced-back, as Nate McCrary found the endzone with an un-touched 30 yard touchdown run to give SVSU the lead back at 17-14. The home team tacked-on another with just 53 seconds to go in the third with Tommy Scott Jr. running one in from 13 yards out to push the count to 24-14.

Tech pulled to within a field goal at the 9:16 marker of the fourth quarter. The visitors used a touchdown run to make the score 24-21 in SVSU's favor.

SVSU got the ball back and used up 5:28 of the clock to set up a 29 yard field goal try. The attempt would be blocked, giving Tech the ball back with 3:48 to play in the contest. 

The Huskies took the ball downfield and scored, taking the lead at 28-24 and leaving just over a minute on the play clock. 

Michigan Tech held defensively he rest of the way, sealing the four point victory over the Cardinals. 

Inside the Boxscore

  • Saginaw Valley out-gained Michigan Tech 381 to 366 in the total offense category and had a 37:57 to 22:03 edge in time of possession.  
  • McCrary gained a career high 98 yards on 18 rushes, notching a touchdown on the ground. He was named the Meijer Player of the Game. 
  • Scott added 81 yards on 14 runs, adding a score himself.
  • Edmondson had the receiving touchdown, catching two balls for 25 yards.
  • Dillon Dixon and Bryan Jones each had a team-best six tackles for the Cardinals defensively.
  • Aaron Berry added five stops for SVSU.

Saginaw Valley travels to play at Grand Valley State University on Saturday (Sep. 30) in another league matchup. The annual Battle of the Valleys contest is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. in Allendale, Michigan.
