UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Coming off back-to-back victories, the Saginaw Valley State University football team was looking to make in three in a row as the Cardinals hosted the Ohio Dominican University Panthers on Saturday (Sep. 24) night. After trailing 14-0 at halftim, SVSU came back with 10 fourth quarter points, but that wasn't enough as the Panthers tacked-on a late score in the fourth to seal a 21-10 victory at SV's Harvey Randall Wickes Memorial Stadium.
ODU got the first score of the game after a Dar Stanford 7-yard run that capped-offa 13 play, 90-yard drive to make the score 7-0 with 3:13 showing on the clock. The visitors tacked-on another with 1:14 left in the second quarter, this time on a Justin Davis 1-yard rush to make it 14-0 after the PAT.
The teams went scoreless from there until SVSU's Alex Kenrick, the reigning GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week, connected on his only field goal attempt of the night, this one a 26-yard try to cut the deficit to 14-3.
The Cards then got a turnover deep in ODU's territory, as a forced fumble was scooped-up by Chris Travis, giving SVSU the ball at the three of the Panthers. On the second play, David Nay took a direct snap and found the endzone, making the score 14-10 after a Kenrick extra-point.
Ohio Dominican's next drive, however, finished with a 31-yard TD pass from Grant Russell to EJ Colson to push the count to 21-10.
A Cardinal interception with just under two minutes left all but finished the contest, as ODU picked up a first down and was able to run out the clock for the 11-point victory.
Inside the Boxscore
- Michael Alexander had a game-high 11 tackles to lead the way defensively.
- Bryan Jones added nine stops, collecting a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery as well. He was named the Meijer "Player of the Game."
- Zack Hadorn had eight tackles and a tackle for loss as well.
- Chris Travis posted five tackles and a fumble recovery, picking up one forced by Dillon Dixon.
- Alfonso Vultaggio led the receiving game with eight grabs for 71 yards.
- Jacob LeClair went 28-of-47 for 233 yards through the air with an interception.
- Kenrick hit on his only field goal attempt and extra-point.
- ODU posted a 350-274 edge in total offense while SVSU held a narrow 30:22 to 29:38 advantage in time of possession.
