UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University football has laid claim back to the coveted Axe Trophy, as the Cardinals will have the trophy around for a year after posting a 20-14 overtime victory over the Northwood Timberwolves on Saturday (Sep. 10) at Wickes Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals got a pair of interceptions from Matt McKoy, including a 94-yard pick-six for the team's first score. SVSU also got a pair of touchdowns from David Nay, the second coming in the first overtime on an 18-yard scamper to seal the team's six-point victory.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Nay finished with 116 yards on 21 carries, marking the first time in his career he has crossed the 100-yard mark. He had two touchdowns, including the game-winner, and was named the Meijer Player of the Game.
  • Alfonso Vultaggio led in receiving with 54 yards on seven catches.
  • McKoy's two interceptions were his first of the season. The return for a touchdown was his second in the past three games dating back to last season. He had a 97-yard pick-six in last year's finale at Grand Valley State. He added 11 tackles in the victory. 
  • Michael Alexander led the way defensively, recording a game-high 15 tackles. He had a tackle-for loss as well. 
  • Joe Craven and Bryan Jones each had nine stops from the linebacker position while Joe Newman had eight in a stellar performance at cornerback.
  • SVSU has claimed eight of the past 10 Axe Bowls on the field, with all but one being decided by a single score.
  • Coach Jim Collins is 7-2 all-time against the Timberwolves in his nine-year stint with SVSU.
  • Northwood held a 497-245 edge in total offense for the game.

The Cardinals travel to North Canton, Ohio to take-on the Walsh University Cavaliers in a GLIAC matchup. Kick-off is set for noon against the south division opponent. Walsh is coming off a 28-10 loss on the road to Hillsdale.
