Dan Smith returns for his third year with the Cardinal staff as an assistant coach.  Prior to SVSU, Smith spent eight years as the varsity coach at St. Louis High School.  While at St. Louis, his team compiled a 174-75 record, winning four league titles and one district title.  Those clubs finished ranked in the top-10 in Michigan five out of the eight seasons Smith was at the helm, and were named Academic All-State for three seasons in a row.  Dan coaches the St. Louis Spirit's Stan Musial club, maintaining a record of 146-59 over nine seasons.  Smith's Musial teams have claimed two league championships.

In the summer of 2008, he coached the Central Michigan Colt League All-Stars to District, State, and North Zone championships before finishing in eighth place at the Colt World Series.

Coach Smith worked primarily with infielders in 2009, as SVSU fielded at a .955 clip, the fourth-highest ever for a Cardinal team.  Smith will work with infielders, as well as hitters, for the 2010 campaign.

Smith is a 1993 graduate of Breckenridge High School and a 1997 graduate of Olivet College, where he played baseball for the Comets while earning a bachelor's degree in Business Communication.  He resides in North Porter with his wife, Mindy, and daughters, Summer and Allison.
