Cardinals Shutout Warriors to Extend Win Streak to Six

DETROIT – Saginaw Valley State University baseball started their four-game series against Wayne State with an 8-0-win Friday afternoon at Harwell Field. The Cardinals (20-7, 9-1 GLIAC) have won six straight and Austin Schweiger extended his hitting streak to six as well. The Warriors (18-9, 7-3) were held to three hits in the complete game shutout thrown by Tyler McLaren (W, 4-1).

Brandon Scheurer, Jeff Reseigh, and Schweiger all had multi-hit games with Connor McClennen tallying the seventh hit for the Cardinals. Scheurer went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored while Schweiger drove in three and Reseigh had two doubles as the only extra base hits for SVSU. McLaren had three hits and two walks against with eight strikeouts over nine innings of work.

Saginaw Valley started the scoring in the top of the third when McClennen scored on a wild pitch and Colin Cornwell grounded out to score Scheurer to make it 2-0. The Cardinals extended their lead in the sixth when Col. Cornwell scored on a wild pitch as well. In the seventh, SVSU put up three more runs against Wayne State starter Karter Fitzpatrick (L, 5-2) as Scheurer singled home Reseigh and Schweiger drove home two with a single up the middle to make it 6-0.

That was the end of Fitzpatrick's day as he pitched seven innings allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits and five walks. The Warriors threw two bullpen arms for an inning each. The Cardinals put up two more runs in the ninth as Schweiger singled home Scheurer and then scored on the third run producing wild pitch of the game to make it 8-0.

SVSU baseball continues their series in Detroit against Wayne State with a doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM before the Cardinals and Warriors wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday.
