Baseball Starts Hot in Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball program started their spring trip to Arizona with a 13-1 run rule victory over Walsh Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals (9-3) posted 13 runs on 14 hits against the Cavaliers (5-4).

SVSU got big performances from Hayden Jatczak who went 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Brandon Schuerer, Austin Schweiger, and Reed Raymond all had two-hit days with Raymond driving in four runs including two on his first home run of the season.

The Cardinals started early with a Jatczak RBI double in the first. They would triple their lead in the second when Connor McClennen stole second while Ryan Jarvis stole home. Scheurer ended that at-bat with an RBI single to score McClennen and make it 3-0. Two more runs were driven in for Saginaw Valley in the top of the fourth when Raymond singled home Colin Cornwell and Jatczak.

Walsh got their only run on an error in the fourth. SVSU starter, Christopher Schmees (W, 1-0) pitched five innings allowing one unearned run on four hits and struck out six batters. He got more run support in the fifth when Col. Cornwell singled Jatczak home and then Jarvis tripled home both Col. Cornwell and Schweiger to make it 8-1.

The final runs of the game came in the sixth with a five-spot for the Cardinals. Jatczak singled home a run and a sacrifice bunt moved two in scoring position for Schweiger. He singled home both Jatczak and Scheurer before touching home on Raymond's home run in the next at-bat making it 13-1 SVSU.

Chase Gruno took over in the sixth and gave up two hits and struck out two. Jake Shelagowski pitched the seventh and got a one-two-three inning including the ninth strikeout for Cardinal pitching to end the game.

With Saginaw Valley leading by 10 or more after the seventh, the game was over. The Cardinals will continue play in Arizona against Walsh on Thursday. First pitch is set for 11:30 AM EST from Tucson, Arizona.
