MIDLAND, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team defeated rival Northwood University 9-2 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series finale Sunday from Gerace Stadium in Midland.
The Cardinals earned the series split with the win and ended the regular season with a 21-26 overall record and 10-14 mark in GLIAC play.
Game Breakdown:
- A Tucker Roe RBI double brought home Todd Paperd and made it 1-0 in the top of the second inning.
- The Cardinals added two more runs in the fourth inning when Paperd doubled home Martin Money and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Roe.
- SVSU brought home three runs in the top of the sixth thanks to RBI singles by Jeffrey Reseigh, Reed Raymond, and Colin Cornwell.
- The Timberwolves got on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning with two solo home runs to make the score 6-2.
- Northwood didn't get any closer, however, as SVSU scored three times in the ninth inning to put away the victory.
- On the mound, Tyler McLaren (5-3) earned the win after pitching seven innings and recording five strikeouts. Hunter Merillat pitched the final two innings in relief for the Cardinals and struck out three.
- Roe, Paperd, and Hayden Jatczak had two hits each, while Roe had two RBIs.

The Cardinals will take on Wayne State University in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament at noon EST Thursday from the U.S. SteelYard in Gary, Indiana.
