SVSU falls to Quincy in series finale

QUINCY, Ill. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team fell in the series finale to non-conference opponent Quincy University 16-6 on Sunday from the Quincy University Baseball Field. The Cardinals are now 19-24 this season. 

Game Breakdown:

  • Austin Schweiger opened the scoring in the first inning with a three-run home run to right field that scored Hayden Jatczak and Colin Cornwell. It was Schweiger's second home run of the weekend and sixth of the season. 
  • The host Hawks responded with five runs in the bottom of the second inning and two more in the third to take a 7-3 lead. 
  • A sacrifice fly by Andrew Burke scored Jeffrey Reseigh and made it 7-4 in the top of the fourth inning. 
  • Quincy added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, before SVSU added two of their own in the top of the seventh after RBI doubles by Conner McClennen and Todd Paperd
  • In the bottom of the seventh, the Hawks scored five runs before adding two runs in the eighth and earning the win. 
  • Tyler McLaren (4-3) took the loss on the mound after pitching three innings and striking out two. Christopher Schmees pitched three innings in relief for the Cardinals and recorded four strikeouts, while Chase Gruno pitched 1.2 innings of relief and JJ Arbini got the final out of the eighth inning. 
  • Jatczak led SVSU at the plate with three hits.
