SVSU drops GLIAC series finale to Davenport

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team lost a close 5-4 game to Davenport University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference series finale on Saturday from the SVSU Baseball Complex. 

The loss drops the Cardinals' record to 17-17 overall and 8-8 in the GLIAC

Game Breakdown:

  • The Panthers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second inning, before adding another run in the top of the fourth to make the score 2-0.
  • SVSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Todd Paperd brought home Martin Money with an RBI double before coming around to score following an RBI single by Jeffrey Reseigh. Andrew Burke broke the 2-2 tie with an RBI double that scored Reseigh and gave the Cardinals a 3-2 lead. 
  • Davenport took the lead for good in the top of the seventh inning with three runs to take a 5-3 lead, SVSU added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning but were unable to get the tying run across the plate as the Panthers struck out Money with Brendan Conkle on first base in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the game. 
  • Tyler McLaren got the start for the Cardinals on the mound and pitched 1.2 innings and struck out one. He was relieved by Christoper Schmees (3-3) who took the loss after pitching 4.2 innings of relief and recording two strikeouts. Reed Raymond also pitched for SVSU and went 2.2 innings while striking out two batters. 
  • Reseigh and Hayden Jatczak led SVSU with two hits each.
