Cardinals split with Panthers in high scoring GLIAC doubleheader

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team earned a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference split against Davenport University on Friday afternoon from the SVSU Baseball Complex.

Davenport took the first game 28-10 in seven innings before SVSU came back to win the second game of the doubleheader 21-7. The split moves the Cardinals' record to 17-16 overall and 8-7 in the GLIAC.

Game One Breakdown:

• The Panthers jumped on the Cardinals with eight runs in the top of the first and two more in the second inning.
• In the bottom of the second, the Cardinals scored five runs thanks to a Colin Cornwell two-run single, a Reed Raymond two-run double, and a solo home run by Martin Money that made the score 8-5.
• Davenport responded with eight runs in the top of the third inning before SVSU came back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by an Andrew Burke RBI single.
• After the Panthers scored two more runs in the top of the fourth, the Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the fifth when Cornwell hit a two-run home run over the wall that scored Raymond. 
• Davenport put the game however with nine runs in the top of the sixth and one more run in the top of the seventh inning.
• On the mound Hayden Jatczak (0-2) took the loss after pitching 3.0 innings and posting three strikeouts.

Game Two Breakdown:

• The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when SVSU posted three runs. Reed Raymond brought home Jeffrey Reseigh with an RBI single, Austin Schweiger doubled home Raymond, and Hayden Jatczak brought home Schweiger with a single up the middle. 
• After Davenport got a run back in the top of the fourth, SVSU scored seven runs in the bottom half of the inning, including two-run singles from both Raymond and Todd Paperd.
• The Cardinals weren't done scoring as they posted four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth, four in the seventh, and two in the eighth on their way to the victory.
• At the plate, Raymond was 4-of-6 with four RBIs to lead SVSU, while Schweiger and Martin Money were both 3-of-5 and Jatczak 2-of-4. 
• Hunter Merillat (3-2) threw 7.0 outstanding innings on the mound for the Cardinals, allowing only five hits and striking out 11 batters.
