SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team lost to the University of Illinois-Springfield 6-5 in 10 innings on Monday afternoon from the UIS Baseball Field.
The Cardinals (0-4) tied the game in the top of the ninth inning but ultimately fell in the 10th when the host Prairie Stars singled home the winning run.
Game Breakdown:
- The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when UIS scored three runs to go up 3-0.
- SVSU responded in the top of the fourth. A sacrifice fly by Logan Welch brought home Tucker Roe, and a double by Colin Cornwell scored Andrew Burke.
- Martin Money tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh when he brought home Reed Raymond on an RBI single.
- UIS scored one run in the bottom of the seventh, and one run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
- The Cardinals tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, thanks to an error by Illinois-Springfield and a sacrifice fly by Money. Hunter Merillat retired the Prairie Stars in order in the bottom of the ninth, and the game went into the 10th inning.
- SVSU was unable to score in the top of the 10th, and UIS hit a walk-off single in the bottom half of the inning to earn the victory.
- Tyler McLaren got the start for SVSU and went 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, two walks, and one strikeout. Merillat came in relief of McLaren and went 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, one walk, and striking out five batters. Kameron Marnon came to pitch the bottom of the 10th for the Cardinals was credited with the loss.
