SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team dropped a 19-8 decision at the University of Illinois-Springfield on Saturday afternoon. It was the first of four games in the opening weekend series for the Cardinals (0-1).
Game Breakdown:
- SVSU opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Martin Money drove in Colin Cornwell with an RBI double. Money was thrown out trying to advance to third on the play.
- The hosts responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, and three more in the bottom of the third to go up 5-1.
- Hayden Jatczak picked up an RBI in the top of the fifth when he drove in Cornwell.
- An Illinois-Springfield error in the top of the sixth allowed SVSU to get back another run.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the Praire Stars blew the game wide open, scoring eight runs and making the score 13-3.
- The Cardinals came back in the top of the eighth with five runs. SVSU got RBIs from Reed Raymond, Todd Paperd, Brandon Scheurer, and Tucker Roe.
- SVSU was unable to complete the comeback however, as Illinois-Springfield sent two balls over the fence in the bottom of the eighth and sealed the victory.
- Kendall Anthes got the start for SVSU and ended up taking the loss. He went six innings, allowing five runs, eight hits, four walks, and striking out two.
