Cardinals close regular season with loss at Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team closed the regular season with the finale of a four-game series with Ashland University Sunday in Ashland, Ohio.

The Cardinals fell behind early and were unable to rally in a 9-2 loss, closing the regular season with a record of 17-15 overall and 12-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Hayden Jatczak put SVSU on the board first with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. After Ashland scored eight unanswered runs, leading 8-1 after six innings, the Cardinals added a run in the seventh on an RBI single from Austin Koin.

Connor McClennen and Todd Paperd each finished with two hits for the Cardinals.

Christopher Schmees (1-3) was charged with the loss on the mound. He started, going two innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, walking one, and striking out one. Kyle Henigan pitched five innings of relief in the loss.

The Cardinals open the 2021 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed against No. 1 seed Davenport University at 2 pm Thursday at Jackson Field in Lansing, Mich.
