UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team hosted a single 9-inning game against Cornerstone University, the third team from the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference the Cardinals have faced this week, Saturday at the SVSU Baseball Complex.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 9-0 lead after four innings and held off a rally by the Golden Eagles to take a 14-6 win. The victory pushes SVSU to 9-6 overall this season.
The scoring started early for the Cardinals with three runs in the first, highlighted by RBI doubles from Martin Money and Austin Koin.
SVSU opened the game up with five in the third. After a wild pitch plated a Cardinal run, Parker Jatczak singled home two, followed by RBIs from Colin Cornwell and Thomas Loftus, while Todd Paperd hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth to drive in another.
Cornerstone got back in the game in the middle innings, cutting the SVSU lead to 10-6 in the top of the seventh. SVSU answered as Money added his third RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh, while Cornwell drove home another in the eighth to put the game away.
Nolan Knauf (2-0) got the win on the mound, tossing five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out four.
The Cardinals are set to return to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play against Wayne State University for a four-game series starting at 3:05 pm Friday in University Center, Mich.
